History of the Lighthouse
The Lighthouse is a small, unassuming place nestled in the heart of the Bible Belt. It’s a music venue, sure, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a place where people can come to worship through music. It’s a place of community and healing.
Founded by James Cone
The Lighthouse was founded by James Cone in Detroit, Michigan in 1965. Cone was a music professor at Wayne State University and an accomplished gospel musician. He had a vision for a place where people could come together to enjoy gospel music and worship God.
Cone started the Lighthouse with a small group of friends and family members. They held their first service in a rented space on the city’s east side. The group quickly outgrew that space, so they moved to a larger room in a local church.
As word of the Lighthouse spread, more people began coming to the services. Cone and his team started hosting concerts and other events to raise money for the growing ministry.
Today, the Lighthouse is still going strong. It is now located in Southfield, Michigan, and continues to be a place where people can come together to enjoy gospel music and worship God.
First location on West 127th Street
In May 1924, the first Lighthouse opened its doors on West 127th Street in New York City. The original music venue was a small room that seated about 200 people. The Lighthouse quickly became known as a place for gospel music. Musicians such as Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, James Cleveland, and the Swan Silvertones often performed there.
In the early 1930s, the Lighthouse moved to a larger location on West 135th Street. The new venue could seat up to 500 people. During this time, the Lighthouse also began booking jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
The Lighthouse continued to be a popular music venue throughout the rest of the 20th century. In the 1970s, it became known as a place for disco music. In the 1980s, it was a popular spot for hip-hop and R&B performers such as Run-DMC and Public Enemy.
The Lighthouse is still open today and continues to be a popular spot for both gospel and jazz concerts.
Second location on West 110th Street
In the 1890s, the Lighthouse was forced to move when its lease was not renewed. It moved a few blocks southwest to a location on West 110th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, where it remained until June 25, 1904. The new location was described as “a four-story brick tenement house with stores on the ground floor.”
