About the Song

“Uptown Funk” is a song by American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars from his second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox (2012). The song was written by Mars, Mark Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, and Philip Lawrence. It was produced by Ronson and Bhasker.

History

“Uptown Funk” was conceived by Ronson in late 2013, after he had received the track “All Night” from Bruno Mars’ then-upcoming album, Unorthodox Jukebox. Having recently completed Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza”, which would go on to be one of the biggest hits of 2016, Ronson decided he wanted to create “something a bit more funktastic”. He recalls that while watching Saturday Night Live with his girlfriend at the time, they saw a commercial for Nutella that featured a group of female dancers; this led to an idea for a song with a similar vibe. He reached out to Mars, who collaborated with him on the track.

After two weeks, the duo had finished writing and producing the song. They created three versions: one with guitars, one without guitars and one with live instrumentation. The final version that appeared on the album was the second version without guitars. The nature of its composition – With regard to its construction and instrumentation – has been variously described as reminiscent of 1970s soul music and 1980s disco respectively.

Composition

“Uptown Funk” was composed by several people; the main writers were Bruno Mars, Phillip Lawrence, Jeff Bhasker, and Mark Ronson (also the producer). The horns and guitar riff were originally written by Mars and Lawrence in 2011. After creating a demo version of the song with his production team The Smeezingtons, Mars brought it to Ronson’s attention during a studio session for Ronson’s album Uptown Special (2015), on which “Uptown Funk” appears. According to Ronson in Rolling Stone, the song came about from their process of creating the album:

Ronson said he brought his idea for “Uptown Funk” to Mars who was initially reluctant but later collaborated with him on the song; their first version was finished in two days.
