The Band
The Band was a Canadian-American rock group formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967. The Band’s original lineup consisted of Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals). The Band’s music blended elements of rockabilly, folk rock, blues and country.
The Band’s debut album Music from Big Pink (1968) was released to critical acclaim and became a commercial success. The follow-up album The Band (1969) received mixed reviews but was also a commercial success. Their next album Stage Fright (1970) peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart and went platinum in the United States; it included the singles “The Shape I’m In” and “Stage Fright”, which peaked at No. 15 and No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart respectively. After the release of Stage Fright, Danko and Manuel both sought treatment for heroin addiction; Helm struggled with alcoholism; Hudson began using cocaine; Robertson increasingly relied on cocaine and marijuana. These health problems caused several personnel changes throughout the 1970s: Robertson left the group in 1976; Danko and Manuel both left in 1977; Helm returned in 1978;and often this new lineup was augmented by violinist Daniel Lanois or keyboardist Richard Bell when touring
The Band continued to tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s but largely eschewed recording studios except for a live album entitled Jericho (1993)and the occasional studio track for various artist compilation albums; these include “Remedy” for Willie Nelson’s The Rainbow Connection (1979), “Don’t Do It” for Marvin Gaye’s posthumous In Our Lifetime Vol. 1(1981),”Atlantic City” for Bruce Springsteen’s We Are the World(1985),”All La Glory” for Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball(1995),”Wheels on Fire”for Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour Volume 3: Times They Are A-Changin'(2006)and “Coyote”for Neil Young’s Le Noise(2010). The group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008
