Funk music is making a comeback on the indie scene, and we couldn’t be happier about it! This infectious genre is the perfect way to get your groove on, and we’ve rounded up some of the best funk tracks around.

Origins of Funk

Funk music first hit the scene in the late 1960s, with artists like James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone. The genre is a mix of soul, R&B, and African-American musical styles. Funky tunes often have a strong groove and emphasize the bass and drums.

James Brown and the Birth of Funk

In the early 1960s, James Brown began experimenting with a new sound that would later come to be known as “funk.” Brown’s bandleader at the time, Jimmy Nolen, helped create this new style of music by developing a distinctive guitar riff that became the signature sound of James Brown’s recordings. This new sound was characterized by a strong backbeat, driving basslines, and horn lines. The term “funk” was first used to describe this new style of music in a 1965 review of James Brown’s live performance at the Apollo Theater.

The Funk Brothers

The Funk Brothers were a group of studio musicians who performed the backing tracks for many Motown recordings from 1959 to 1972. The group consisted of rhythm section instrumentalsists, bassists, keyboardists and guitarists, including James Jamerson on bass guitar, Earl Van Dyke on keyboards and guitar, and Joe Messina on lead guitar. The Funk Brothers had a major impact on the development of popular music, playing on 190 number one hits and over 4,000 Motown recordings.

The group was originally assembled by Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of Motown Records, in 1959. He had the idea to bring together some of the best musicians in Detroit to play the tracks for his upcoming Motown productions. The band became known as “The Funk Brothers” after they were featured on a track called “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”.

The Funk Brothers were responsible for creating the “Motown Sound”, which was a combination of R&B, pop and soul. They were one of the most successful studio bands of all time, playing on hits such as “My Girl”, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)”.

Despite their success, the members of The Funk Brothers were not given credit for their contributions to Motown’s success until much later. In 2002, they were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
