The song was inspired by a newspaper article Vedder read about a high school student who shot himself in front of his English class. The character in the song is named Jeremy Delle, and is based on the real-life experiences of a high school student. The song caused controversy upon its release, as many people interpreted its lyrics to be pro-suicide.

The song peaked at number five on both the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock Billboard charts.
