Introduction

On February 13th, 1971, the American rock band Grand Funk Railroad released their fourth studio album, Foot Stompin’ Music. The record was produced by Terry Knight and is considered one of the band’s heaviest albums. Despite its heavy sound, the album spawned the hit single “Foot Stompin’ Music”, which reached #2 on the Billboard charts.

The album artwork was designed by Jim Shultz and features a close-up photograph of a foot stomping on a distortion pedal. The artwork was done in black and white to match the band’s stage attire at the time.

Foot Stompin’ Music was reissued on CD in 2006 by Capitol Records.

The making of the album

Foot Stompin’ Music was released on October 27, 1971, just six months after E-Pluribus Funk. The album was recorded in the same sessions as its predecessor, with the band once again utilizing the services of producer Terry Knight. Foot Stompin’ Music was another hit for the band, reaching #5 on the Billboard 200 and going platinum. The album featured the singles “Foot Stompin’ Music” and “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”, both of which were hits.

The album was recorded in two sessions in March and April 1971 at Alabama Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It was the first album to feature drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher, who replaced original members Craig Frost and Denis Bellinger. The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA.

In 2005, they were voted as one of the top 10 most influential live bands of all time by a reader’s poll in Classic Rock magazine. In 2011, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
