In this blog post, we’ll be taking a look at some of the top rock music figures of all time. These are the artists who have shaped the genre and made it what it is today.

The Beatles

The Beatles were an English rock band that became arguably the most successful act of the 20th century. They contributed to music, film, literature, fashion, and art. Their influence on popular culture and society is still evident today. The Beatles are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 600 million records worldwide. They are the best-selling music artists in the United States, with 178 million certified units. They have had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any other act.

Led Zeppelin

While many argue that the Beatles were the greatest band of all time, it is Led Zeppelin that defined rock and roll. Formed in 1968, the band consisted of singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. They released their self-titled debut album in early 1969, which featured songs like “Good Times Bad Times” and “Dazed and Confused.” The album was an instant success, reaching the number one spot on the UK charts.

Led Zeppelin’s sound was a unique combination of blues and rock, with a heavy emphasis on guitar and drums. Their second album, “Led Zeppelin II,” was released later that year and featured more of their signature sound. Songs like “Whole Lotta Love” and “Moby Dick” cemented Led Zeppelin’s place as one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Over the next few years, Led Zeppelin released a string of successful albums, including “Houses of the Holy” (1973), “Physical Graffiti” (1975), and “In Through the Out Door” (1979). They also undertook several world tours, cementing their status as one of the most popular live acts of all time.

Sadly, John Bonham died in 1980, bringing an end to Led Zeppelin. The band released one final album posthumously, featuring previously unreleased tracks recorded with Bonham before his death. “Coda” was released in 1982 and served as a fitting tribute to one of rock’s greatest bands.

Pink Floyd

Even if you’re not a fan of Pink Floyd, it’s impossible to deny their influence on rock music. The band formed in London in 1965 and achieved international success with their concept albums, which explored philosophy, social commentary, and the human condition.

Pink Floyd is perhaps best known for their album The Dark Side of the Moon, which stayed on the Billboard charts for 741 weeks — an unprecedented feat. Other popular albums include Wish You Were Here and Animals.

The band has sold more than 250 million records worldwide and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Jones left the band less than a month before his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who remained until 1974. Following Wyman’s departure in 1993, Darryl Jones joined as their touring bassist. Other touring keyboardists for the band have been Nicky Hopkins (1967–1982), Billy Preston (1971–1981), Ian McLagan (1978–1981), and Chuck Leavell ( 1982–present). In 1989, Jones died from a heroin overdose and Watts retired as a touring musician due to ongoing heart problems; Woody Woodmansey et al. stepped into fill their spots respectively on bass and drums during tours while new guitarist Tyagi Abassi became a permanent replacement for Jones at studio sessions. The Rolling Stones have not had an official keyboardist since 1962; instead they have employed guest musicians for studio recordings and touring shows. Keyboardists who have contributed to their recorded output include Jack Nitzsche 1963; Colin Salmon 1964; Al Kooper 1967; Jon Astley 1972 & 1974; Chuck Leavell 1982–present; Matt Clifford 1987 & 1994 among others.

The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. The Young brothers began their musical careers in Adelaide where they formed AC/DC in 1973. They found work with a backing band for popular Sydney act Fraternity, and by late 1974 were playing regularly around Melbourne as a headlining act. Working part-time on construction jobs during the day to make ends meet, they performed nights and weekends in small clubs and pubs. Lead singer Bon Scott joined the group in 1974; John Engstrom took over as bassist a short time later after Mark Evans quit to join Jimmy Barnes’s group Jinn.

Malcolm and Angus Young developed their musical style early on from their family’s musical influences—Steamhammer, Status Quo, Cream, The Rolling Stones, led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath—and from other Australian groups like Rose Tattoo and Buffalo Springfield. The sound was further created and honed through hours of playing small venues until their audience appeal began to expand beyond Australia’s borders. By 1977 they had toured Europe supporting Kiss and Aerosmith before returning home to headline their own shows. They achieved international success with the 1979 release of Highway to Hell—their first album to be certified platinum in the United States—and became a global concert attraction with The Razors Edge World Tour (1990–91).
