The history of Gospel Music

Gospel music is American music. Its roots are in the songs NGraved by English Protestants in the American colonies during the 18th century. The first Gospel song written was “Christian Life” (1787) followed soon after by “Hosanna to the Son of David” (1789).
The popularity of Gospel grew throughout the 19th century with such songs as “Amazing Grace” (1830), “Rock of Ages” (1840), and “Nearer My God To Thee” (1856). These songs were not only popular in America, but Europe as well.
In the early 20th century, new genres of Gospel music, such as Spirituals, Jug Bands, and Blues, emerged. Gospel songs also began to be performed in a more professionalized manner with groups like The Fisk Jubilee Singers and composers like Moses Hogan becoming known outside of the church.
The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s saw a renewed interest in Gospel music with such artists as Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland, and Clara Ward becoming widely known. And though its popularity has ebbed and flowed over the years, Gospel music is still an important part of American culture.

This is evident by the way that it has been used to inspire people during times of struggle, comfort people during times of pain, and bring people together from all walks of life.

Gospel music is more than just entertainment; it is a way to celebrate our culture and heritage.

While gospel music is often associated with Christianity, it is important to remember that this genre of music is enjoyed by people of all faiths (and no faith at all). Gospel music speaks to the human condition, which is something that we can all relate to regardless of our beliefs.
