Grunge is an important part of music history. It’s a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the mid-1980s in the Pacific Northwest U.S. state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. Grunge music is typically characterized by heavy guitar riffs, angsty lyrics, and a DIY aesthetic.

Formed in 1987, the band rose to fame with their 1991 album Nevermind, which features the hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain was a major figure in the grunge scene and his tragic death in 1994 brought an end to the band.

Other notable grunge bands include Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. Soundgarden was formed in 1984 and released their debut album Ultramega OK in 1988. The band’s fourth album, Superunknown, was a commercial success and won two Grammy Awards. Soundgarden disbanded in 1997 but reunited in 2010 and released their seventh studio album King Animal in 2012.
