Introduction

The American Music Awards honors the best in music from the past year and is one of the biggest nights in music. This year, for the first time ever, the show will feature a Latin music category.

The nominees for Latin Artist of the Year are Camila Cabello, Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, Ozuna and Shakira. The winner will be announced at the show, which will air live on Sunday, October 9 at 8pm ET on ABC.

This is a big moment for Latin music and its artists, who have long been underrepresented at major award shows. It’s also a sign of the growing popularity of Latin music in the United States; according to Nielsen, Latin music streams increased by 43 percent last year.

This award goes to an artist who has released their debut album within the eligibility period. This is usually a very talented artist who has been honing their craft for years before finally releasing their first album.

Record of the Year

This year, the American Music Awards went Latin, with four of the top prizes being awarded to Spanish-language artists.

The awards were handed out Sunday night in Los Angeles, with Latin rapper Bad Bunny taking home three honors, including Artist of the Year. He dedicated his award to Puerto Rico, which is still recovering from Hurricane Maria.

Bunny’s album “YHLQMDLG” won for Favorite Latin Album, and he was also recognized as Favorite Male Artist in the Latin category.

Singer Ozuna won for Favorite Male Artist in the Latin category and for Favorite Song in the same category for “Tu Pon Tu Pon.”

In the pop/rock categories, Billie Eilish won for both Artist of the Year and Favorite Female Artist. She dedicated her award to “allthe little girls dreamin’of doing what I’m doin’ tonight.”Eilish also won favorite album in the pop/rock category for “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”

Album of the Year

This year’s American Music Awards album of the year went to a Latin artist for the first time in the show’s history.

The award went to Bad Bunny for his album “El Último Tour Del Mundo,” which was released in November. It is the first time a Latin artist has won the award in the show’s nearly 50-year history.

Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a 26-year-old Puerto Rican singer, rapper and songwriter. He burst onto the music scene in 2016 with his debut album “X 100PRE” and has since released several other albums and mixtapes, including “Oasis,” a collaborative album with J Balvin.

In an acceptance speech that was recorded prior to the show, Bad Bunny said he was “extremely excited and honored” to receive the award.

“This award is for all Latinos around the world,” he said. “Latinos are making history today. We are proving that anything is possible. So dream big and fight for what you believe in because today we are here and tomorrow we will be everywhere.”

The other nominees for album of the year were Taylor Swift for “ Folklore,” Dua Lipa for “Future Nostalgia,” Post Malone for “Hollywood’s Bleeding” and Megan Thee Stallion for “Good News.

Song of the Year

This year, the American Music Awards went Latin, with many awards going to Spanish-language songs and artists. The award for Song of the Year went to “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. This award is given to the artist (or artists) who have written and performed a song that has had great success over the past year.

Best New Artist

This year’s American Music Awards were dominated by Latin artists, with Shakira, Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony taking home top honors.
