It’s been a great year for pop music, with a lot of new hits coming out from some of our favorite artists. In this article, we’ll be counting down the best pop songs of 2016. These are the songs that have been stuck in our heads all year long.

“Can’t Stop the Feeling!” is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake for the film Trolls (2016), composed by Timberlake, Max Martin and Shellback, and produced by the latter two. The song was released on May 6, 2016 by RCA Records as the lead single from the soundtrack. “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” is a disco, funk and soul song that features instrumentation from bass guitar, percussion and keyboards. Its lyrics describe Timberlake’s positive emotions following a blind date.

The song peaked at number one on both the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and the Canadian Hot 100 chart, giving Timberlake his fourth US number one single and his first since “Suit & Tie” in 2013. In the Billboard Hot 100’s history, it became Timberlake’s 20th top 10 hit and his sixth solo number one overall; it also spent eight weeks atop Billboard’s Digital Songs chart, which tracks online downloads of songs. In October 2016, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” received three nominations at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Pop Solo Performance, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Timberlake’s album The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 (2013). It went on to win all three awards.

“Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” is a song recorded by English singer-songwriter Adele for her third studio album, 25. It was written by Adele and Max Martin, produced by the latter along with Shellback, and released on 16 May 2016 as the album’s third single. “Send My Love” is a pop and R&B ballad Written in the key of C major; Adele’s vocal range spans from B♭3 to D5 while the music follows a chord progression of Emaj7–G–Cadd9, making it her second single to feature guitar after “Someone like You”.

Critical reception towards “Send My Love” was positive. Music critics dubbed the track as one of 25’s best, commending its production and lyrics. “One Dance” is a song recorded by Canadian rapper Drake from his fourth studio album, Views (2016). The song features guest vocals from Wizkid and Kyla. It was released to radio stations on April 5, 2016, as the lead single from the album. “One Dance” peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, becoming Drake’s first number-one single in both countries as a lead artist. The song became Drake’s first ever single to top the Hot 100 chart for more than one week and also set a new record for most weeks at number one for a solo male artist in the UK; it was additionally certified multi-platinum in several countries.

“Work” is a song recorded by Barbadian singer Rihanna for her eighth studio album, Anti (2016). The song was released as the lead single from the album on January 27, 2016. “Work” is a dancehall and R&B track that samples “Sweat”, a 1993 track from Canadian R&B group TLC. This is the second time Drake and Rihanna have collaborated following their hit “What’s My Name?” in 2010. Music critics praised the chemistry between the two artists on the single as well as its interpolation of TLC’s classic track.

The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, giving Rihanna her 14th US number-one single and making Drake the artist with the most number-one singles in 2016. “Cheap Thrills” is a song by Australian singer Sia from her seventh studio album, This Is Acting (2016). It was written by Sia, Greg Kurstin and Jesse Shatkin, and produced by Kurstin. The song was released on 11 February 2016 as the lead single from the album. It reached number one in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Lebanon, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden. In the United Kingdom, “Cheap Thrills” became both Sia’s and Sean Paul’s first number-one single as lead artists; it spent four non-consecutive weeks atop the UK Singles Chart. The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

“This Is What You Came For” by Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna

This Is What You Came For” is a song by Scottish DJ and record producer Calvin Harris, featuring vocals from Barbadian singer Rihanna. It was released on 29 April 2016 as the fourth single from Harris’ third studio album, Motion (2014). The song was co-written by Harris and his frequent collaborator Chris O’Flyng, and is Harris’ seventh collaboration with Rihanna. “This Is What You Came For” became the fourth consecutive single from Motion to reach the top-five of the UK Singles Chart; it debuted at number five on 21 May 2016—marking both Harris’ and Rihanna’s seventeenth top-five single in the UK—and peaked at number three two weeks later. In the US, it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on 18 June 2016, becoming Calvin Harris’ sixth solo US top-five singles as well as Rihanna’s thirtieth US top five hit.

The song’s conception began when representatives of Calvin Harris contacted Norwegian DJ and producer Tom Staar in early 2015; Staar had previously remixed songs such as “Under Control” (2013) and “Outside” (2014) forHarris. Staar subsequently co-wrote “This Is What You Came For”, with additional writing from Jamie Norton with control of the composition credited to Harris and O’Flyng. O’Flyng also assisted with production tasks; he created its instrumentation while Norton worked on its vocal melody. The song samples a 30-second riff from American disco group Pygmy Love Circus’ 2006 track “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)”..
